Matti Klein: Soul Trio bounces in Bubbleverse
They say we all live in our own bubble. Thanks to the power of social media and algorithms, we are trapped in a world where we only want to hear the same thing. But is that really true?
On their third album Soul Trio Bouncin’ In Bubbleverse, Matti Klein and his Soul Trio will demonstrate: juggling diverse bubbles can be an incredible fun. Spheres of jazz, funk, hip-hop, or cosmic rock, to passionately explore their boundaries and push them with pizzazz to discover new perspectives.
They have always been an unconventional trio. This trio has a unique sound rooted in the warm tone of Klein's Wurlitzer electric piano, which serves as a deep foundation for the rare 1973 Rhodes Bass and the altered, expressive playing of saxophonist and clarinetist Lars Dieterich. They are joined by the incredibly rhythmically flexible drums of André Seidel. The result is “a new, breathtaking, hot twist on the very popular organ trio format,” as the British magazine Jazzwise once put it.
“As a musician, you constantly travel through all kinds of bubbles,” explains bandleader Klein, the album title: “sometimes you are at a big festival, and then again in a small jazz club.” And we constantly bounce and dive into a new universe time and again.
The man knows what he’s talking about. After all, the master of vintage keyboards he was, was born in Berlin in 1984 and can be called the hardest traveling man in Germany. A member of the successful jazz-funk formation Mo' Blow and musical director of Brazilian soul-pop legend Ed Motta, Klein has performed on the stages of the most important jazz clubs in New York, Tokyo, London, and Paris. And his Soul Trio, founded in 2017 with Dieterich and fellow Mo' Blow member Seidel, can now recall over 300 concerts worldwide - with performances and tours in South Africa, Malaysia, Bahrain, Finland, and the UK among others.
Bouncin' In Bubbleverse particularly reflects these many years of shared experiences. All songs written by the bandleader have a kind of encore that contains elements of the original song but interprets them much more freely, and sometimes in a completely different way. Klein calls these reflections “echoes,” which adds further nuance, meaning the album's filtering bubble motif: changing perspective and letting go opens your eyes to a new viewpoint.
For example, the delicate, dreamy summer ballad “A Summer Fairytale” receives a fiery Latin happy ending. “New Frontiers,” which mediates between hip-hop aesthetics, yacht-pop sunshine, and metrically flipped retro soul jazz, transforms into a psychedelic polyrhythmic anthem. The driving, rock-infused “Left Lane Larry,” inspired by left-hand traffic in the UK, returns as a soulful blues. “Cape Town After Dark,” on the flip side, which also recalls the trio's poignant experiences from the tour, takes on a bittersweet energy, gaining a deeper, spiritual tone in the echo's resonance.
In any case, the first album created in Klein's own studio in Prenzlauer Berg shows how it’s done. In recent years, the trio has developed and matured significantly. Songs like the almost characteristic chanson “End of Sight,” composed on the Azorean island of Graciosa, exude a tremendous inner calm and awareness that you can rely on the other.
The trio has also refined another signature hallmark – the use of wild, strange time signatures. No composition from Soul Trio Bouncin' In Bubbleverse is available in the conventional 4/4 time. But it seems that no one takes this badly. On the contrary – you’ll even want to dance to it. After all, it’s “strange times for a party,” just like the album's ambiguous opening track. “That’s what this album is about,” explains Matti Klein. “Perhaps we live in difficult and strange times – but we make the best of it!”
